You don’t need a big space to labor in, but you will likely want a few things nearby. You’ll want a bed, a space in which you can use birth balls for light movement, a bathroom, and you may also opt for a tub. We may move around some furniture just to make movement easier within the space. Your midwife can talk you through all of your options. How long do you stay after birth? After birth, we usually stay for 3-4 hours to make sure you and your baby are settling in fine. The first hour after birth, we will check on mom and baby quite frequently. Baby will stay on mom’s chest while we do all of our checks to promote skin-to-skin contact. After the first 1-2 hours, we will do a complete newborn exam on the baby. We’ll keep checking in on the mom frequently as well. Before we leave we will clean up and drain the tub. So don’t worry, we leave your house looking fresh and clean!
